eliminate them first.

This explains why Chiang is
now supporting Feng Yu-hsiang so strongly, not only in the latter's striving for political power in
Nanking, but also in his efforts to strengthen his
military forces. Chiang's object is to utilise
Feng against the Kwongsi-ites, as he alone is not
strong enough.
It is likely that Chiang Kai-shek will,
through Tang Sang-chi, work for the disintegration of
the armies of the Kwongsi-ites. A large number of
the officers and men now commanded by Pei Chung-hsi
and Li Chung-jen were formerly under Tang. Chiang
may also arrange to get the troops under Miao Pei-nan
now on the border of Shantung and Kiangsu down to the
borders of Kwongtung. These troops are communistic.
Should Chiang ever succeed in getting Tang Sang-chi's
old troops or Miao's troops into Kwongtung, there
would be an upheaval in Kwongtung; and thereafter
there would be no peace for the peoples of Kwongtung
and Hong Kong.
